Dr. Hillary Devlin is a licensed clinical psychologist and co-founder of Flatiron CBT. She specializes in treatment approaches to help you navigate anxiety, OCD, and other life difficulties (e.g., life transitions, low motivation, perfectionism, self-doubt) with more flexibility, awareness, self-compassion, and purpose. Dr. Devlin earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology from Yale University. She then completed her clinical internship at the University of Washington School of Medicine, followed by a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at The Reeds Center for Anxiety, OCD, and Related Disorders. She is licensed in New York and Vermont, and authorized to practice in all participating PSYPACT states.
Dr. Devlin has received extensive training in empirically-supported Cognitive Behavioral Therapies (CBT) with particular focus on mindfulness-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). She uses these therapies to help adults navigate chronic worry & rumination, self-doubt, perfectionism, and indecision. She has specific expertise in treating OCD with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and has worked with clients on a wide range of OCD themes (e.g., morality, harm, sexual orientation, pedophilia, R-OCD, perinatal and postpartum, health & illness anxiety, hyper-awareness, hyper-responsibility, real event, fear of forgetting, 'just right,' and many more). She also utilizes Exposure Therapy to help clients struggling with social anxiety and shame, specific phobias, panic attacks, and inflexibility/high desire for control.
While the therapies that Dr. Devlin uses are backed by research to effectively treat anxiety and OCD, they also provide a valuable set of tools for anyone interested in enhancing well-being and personal growth. Dr. Devlin has a specialized focus in exploring how mindfulness, acceptance, and self-compassion can help in finding more freedom from our thoughts and feelings. She enjoys working with clients who are generally feeling stuck and held back in some way - whether caught up in cycles of self-doubt, hyperproductivity, 'shoulds,' or procrastination/avoidance. She finds it deeply rewarding to work collaboratively with clients as they clarify what matters most, face their fears & stuck points, and continually build a life that feels personally meaningful to them.
Dr. Devlin has served as an Adjunct Clinical Supervisor at Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology (Yeshiva University), providing supervision for doctoral students in the Adult Clinical program. In addition to her training as a clinician and supervisor, Dr. Devlin has been involved in research and teaching, and these experiences continue to inform her work with patients. The primary focus of her research has been on human emotion and empathy. She has taught courses on Human Emotion to undergraduates at Yale University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on empathic positive emotion (i.e., the experience of sharing in others’ happiness) and its impact on self-perceptions and prosocial behavior.
Dr. Devlin's interest in emotion and empathy remains a cornerstone of her clinical work. In approaching her work with patients, she aims to bring curiosity, flexibility, and openness, and to help them better understand and respond to their emotions, and connect with their sense of empathy and compassion towards themselves and others. Both personally and professionally, Dr. Devlin is also passionate about the practice of mindfulness meditation (e.g., vipassana and metta). She has received instruction/teaching in this area and has completed silent retreats to deepen her practice.
